The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is in need of nearly 3,000 volunteers in October to help fight hunger in Oklahoma. Because of the work that volunteers do, the Regional Food Bank is able to provide enough food to feed more than 126,000 Oklahomans each week throughout 53 central and western Oklahoma counties.
“We encourage individuals and groups to volunteer during the week to help sort donations for our neighbors struggling with hunger,” said John Bobb-Semple, director of community engagement at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. “Every shift worked by a volunteer will pack an average of 250 meals for hungry children, families and seniors in our state.”
Volunteer tasks include: bagging and boxing food products, boxing bread, packing Food for Kids sacks and more. Pillar Volunteers are also needed. These skills-based volunteers donate their time and talents to further the mission of the Regional Food Bank in “Fighting Hunger…Feeding Hope.”
"I think if people tried volunteering once they would be hooked,” said Lisa Toombs, Regional Food Bank volunteer. “It’s so easy to come in and feel like you have done something."
The Regional Food Bank is located at 3355 S. Purdue in Oklahoma City. Volunteer hours are Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m. Volunteer opportunities are also available Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The Volunteer Center welcomes volunteers of all ages, starting as young as eight years old, Monday through Saturday.
