A Harrah fifth grader and his dad are about to take the hunting trip of a lifetime.
Landon Jones, 10, has stage three chronic kidney disease, and he will need a kidney transplant for long-term survival. His dad Brad Jones found out about a non-profit organization called “Hunt of a Lifetime” a month ago.
That organization has granted Landon Jones' wish to go Black Bear Hunting in Alaska. Landon and his dad leave this Saturday.
“They fly us to Fairbanks, Alaska, put us on a float plane, put us out in the bush, and we get to hunt bear for five days,” a beaming Brad Jones said Wednesday, from “Practical Shooting” Range in McCloud.
Wes Elliott owns the shooting range, and is a law enforcement sniper training instructor. He and another sniper instructor has been training 10-year-old Landon free of charge for the past three weeks.
Elliott said the “Hunt of a Lifetime” guide who will be with Landon and his dad during the hunt said they will get their bear.
“He's telling him he'll get ‘em within 25 yards of a bear. So he's going to have to be on,” Elliott said with a grin.
As for why Landon chose to hunt a bear when there were other choices he said, “I wanted to do the scariest thing.”
