After five years of being housed in a double-wide trailer, the Grady County Sheriff's Department finally has a new permanent home.
Sheriff Jim Weir cut the ribbon of the department's new headquarters Wednesday afternoon, which actually sits next to the parking lot where that double-wide trailer used to sit.
The large building Weir's department moved into is actually more than a century old. It most recently was home to Chickasha's local newspaper.
Undersheriff Rusty Pyle said $55,000 in renovations to the building actually cost the county probably less than half that. He said deputies and Grady County Jail inmates donated their time to work on the renovation.
“When they found we were going to get this building, the morale automatically jumped up ten-fold,” Undersheriff Pyle beamed, when he talked about the move.
And for those keeping score at home, yes jail inmates did donate their time, but for every day they donated, they got two days taken off their sentences.
