Three former Southwestern Christian University student athletes are accused of a gang rape that dates back to 2012.
But the university and Bethany Police just learned of the allegations.
The university and the former SCU soccer coach of the accused spoke only to News 9.
SCU officials said they received an email Sunday laying out allegations of a 2012 gang rape off campus.
The school said this is the first time it has heard about the sexual assault by former soccer players.
“The whole event is a shock to us,” said John Mashburn, SCU General Counsel. “But anytime there is any allegation like this, we're deeply concerned.”
Allegations of gang rape by student athletes at SCU suddenly surfaced after three years.
“Whether it turns out to be true or not, any allegation like this is of great concern to us,” said Mashburn.
A Facebook post is what sparked the investigation.
It alleged in 2012 a student "participated in a gang rape in student housing at SCU Bethany." Although, university officials said it did not happen on campus.
The post also alleged a student "drugged and took turns with assaulting an unconscious girl. Unfortunately, his buddies caved under pressure and gave him up."
“Every college coach fears these accusations whether it's the biggest college or the smallest college,” said Neil Cagle.
Neil Cagle coached soccer at Southwestern Christian for six years before resigning in December.
“All those guys have stayed in my home, and you know, we've all attended church together,” said Cagle. “They seem to act like responsible young men. It is shocking. The accusation is shocking.”
And he said the accusations are completely out of character for the three former players.
“It's unreal. I just could not believe that it would be true. On the other hand, I want to be sensitive to the accuser,” said Cagle.
“We're concerned about all the individuals involved, said Mashburn. “We just want to cooperate with the police.”
Bethany Police will only say they're conducting a rape investigation involving three student athletes at SCU.
A police report was filed Wednesday by the alleged victim.
