OK Governor Tours Tornado Damage In Quapaw

Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin toured tornado damage in Quapaw Monday afternoon.

Fallin arrived at the Quapaw Fire Station, located at 403 Main Street around noon where she was first briefed by local and state emergency officials, who had been working through the night following Sunday's tornado.

The tornado struck an area from First to Sixth streets in Quapaw. One person was killed in the storm. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said John L. Brown, 68, of Baxter Springs, Kansas was traveling with his wife when the tornado struck. Brown pulled into a parking lot where a concrete wall fell onto his car. Brown was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife was transported to a local hospital and treated and released.

Officials said five others were transported to a local hospital, all listed in good or fair condition. Many more people considered "walking wounded" were treated at the scene.

The tornado destroyed 15 structures in Quapaw, mostly homes and at least five businesses and the Quapaw volunteer fire department station. Roughly 45 other structures sustained major or minor damage.

"Our hearts and prayers are with those who have been affected by Sunday's tornado," Fallin said. "The state is prepared to offer every resource available to assist with cleanup, rebuilding and recovery."

Fallin said crews brought in generators Sunday night to provide power to the community. She said she has also declared a state of emergency for Ottawa County, which will allow state agencies to make emergency purchases needed to expedite the delivery of resources to affected areas.

The declaration also serves as a first step toward seeking federal assistance should it be necessary.

Fallin also said more assessments will be made throughout the day.
