Road Trip Oklahoma is on the move once again. Oklahoma's Own News 9 will be stopping in Shawnee, Oklahoma on Friday, September 9.
After the Land Run of 1891, early settlers named their town Shawnee, named after the Shawnee Indian tribe. Starting with a population of approximately 250 in 1892, this town has continued to grow with a current population of over 29,000. Shawnee is home to two private universities, Oklahoma Baptist University and St. Gregory's College.
Known as the "water-garden capital of Oklahoma", Shawnee proudly features an on-site display of water gardens by Pond Pro Shops. In addition, Shawnee is home to both the Hornbeck Theatre and the Ritz Theatre. The Hornbeck Theatre opened in 1947, and still serves as the community's $1.50 movies. The Ritz Theatre, which still shows live theater and musical productions throughout the year, is the oldest theatre in Oklahoma to be owned by one family.
Former Oklahoma governor Brad Henry, astronaut Leroy Gordon Cooper, superstar Brad Pitt, and many other well-known individuals have been residents of Shawnee at one time or another.
Join Oklahoma's Own News 9 on our stop to experience Shawnee and all it has to offer on September 9.
