Moore City Workers Repair Tombstones After Cemetery Shootout

MOORE, Oklahoma -- A mother in Moore is relieved her son's gravestone at Moore Cemetery only received minor damage during Sunday's shootout at the cemetery.

Lou Calhoun said she was a little anxious when she went to view the damage to her son's gravestone at the Moore City Cemetery Monday morning.

Several gravestones were damaged Sunday during a wild fracas that included a head-on crash involving two cars, plus some gunfire.

One of those gravestones sits atop the body of Calhoun's son, Derek, who was killed in Iraq four years ago.

She was glad to find that the gravestone, now remounted, has only a small scratch on the back.

"I thought it was damaged a lot when I got the phone call," she said. "I am very relieved. because it was an etched headstone, and it was very expensive, and it means a lot."

Moore police are still trying to sort on what happened and who was involved.

"One group says the other group fired at them, and the other group says they fired at them," said Sgt. Jeremy Lewis, the Moore police spokesman. "Detectives are still trying to figure out what went on."

No arrests have been made yet.

Lou Calhoun says the people involved in the fight should have to pay for the damage to her son's grave. "He gave his life for his country, and he should be safe in the cemetery," she said.
