Harrah Junior High Students Arrested In Prescription Drug Overdose Case

HARRAH, Oklahoma -- Harrah police announced they are planning to charge a total of seven junior high students for last month's prescription pill overdose that sent three students to the hospital.

"This is the new underage drinking," said officer Phil Stewart with the Harrah police department. "This is a big problem and we are doing everything we can to help stop it."

Police arrested two students Thursday and more arrests are expected to follow. News 9 was there as one of those students was being led to a waiting police car after being booked. The student was one of five boys and two girls facing felony charges for possessing and distributing a controlled and dangerous substance on school property. Formal charges have not yet been filed but are expected within the next week.

In response to the incident, the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics (OBN) installed one of its prescription drug drop boxes at the Harrah Police Department. People can use them to safely dispose of their unused or expired prescription drug medications.

The OBN will be putting in 100 drop boxes around the state.

"This is the first program of its kind," said OBN Director Darrell Weaver. "We hope to be a model for the nation."
