OKLAHOMA CITY -- Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford is still being honored in New York City, and Monday at home his biggest fans were still celebrating.
Before he was a Sooner, Bradford was a Panther at Putnam City North High School.
"He was a great kid, just a fun little boy; happy, well-behaved, well-mannered, good boy," P.C. North's Career Counselor Heather Martin said.
Coach Bob Wilson remembers the new Heisman Trophy winner.
"I just called him and told him how proud we were of him, how proud we were about the way he represents the state of Oklahoma, and Putnam City North," Wilson said.
Three years ago Bradford was walking the halls, just another student at P.C. North. But even then his teachers knew there was something special about him.
Bradford was a 4.0 student, a multi-sport athlete and a young man who, even then, displayed that coolness in the pocket poise.
"I never saw anything shake him, I mean, he's just a very poised young man," P.C. North teacher Dee Dee Stafford said. "Nothing addles him. He takes everything in stride."
That's why Martin saved an autographed newspaper picture when Bradford was a senior. And that's why some staff members wore Bradford's number Monday.
It won't be long before OU erects another Heisman Trophy statue in Norman.
But for now, it's a great day to be a Panther.
Putnam City North High School plans to hold a celebration in Bradford's honor when he returns from New York City.
And Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett said the city will also honor the Heisman Trophy winner when he gets back.
