EL RENO, Okla. -- A Canadian County commissioner could compete with his assistant to keep his job in an upcoming election.

Theresa Ramsey has decided to run for District 2 County Commissioner, a position her boss, Don Young, has held for the past 18 years.

"I heard that Don was going to retire so I just decided that ‘hey this might be something that I may be interested in doing,'" Ramsey said.

Young said he hasn't decided if he'll run for another term. If he does, it won't be the first time he's faced a challenge from his assistant.

Young defeated Ramsey in the last election and said her decision places a strain on their working relationship.

"It's difficult to be in the same office with somebody running against you," Young said.

Young said he wants Ramsey to resign or take a leave of absence during the campaign. Ramsey said she plans to continue working.

"Even if I would have gone to Don and said ‘Don I'm considering running would you give me your blessings' I still don't think he would give me his blessings," Ramsey said.
