After several hours of questioning, Tulsa Police arrested a man they believe shot his wife in the face Monday morning.
Rueben Dale Lewis, a convicted felon, initially told police his wife was on her morning walk when someone drove by and shot her.
When detectives arrived at the home near 56th Street North and Martin Luther King Blvd., they couldn't find blood, shell casings, or any other signs of a shooting outside.
The circumstances around the shooting had police asking a lot of questions; questions about lack of evidence, and why no one else called 911 if they heard gunfire outside their front doors.
"There was really not any scene we could figure out here in the neighborhood," Sgt. Justin Farley said. "We received no other calls in reference to shots being fired, so we're kind of concerned about the information we're getting at this point."
Neighbor Isaiah Harbin told News On 6 he woke up to the sound of "rapid fire" coming from somewhere in the neighborhood, but he couldn't tell where.
"I don't know what happened, but I just heard some loud gunfire," Harbin said.
He said hearing gunshots isn't unheard of in the area, but it doesn't typically happen on his street.
"I was scared. I was worried," he said. "My mom lives right here, and she's about to have surgery. I don't really want this in my neighborhood."
Officers said Lewis made the initial 911 call around 8:40 a.m., and that's when he told officers it was a drive-by shooting. Although officers found signs of a struggle outside the home, the evidence still didn't point to a shooting.
"We would expect to find some blood, if not shell casings," Sgt. Farley said.
An arrest report states when police were able to get a search warrant for the house, they found a gun magazine and bullets. They said it appeared as if there was a struggle inside the home with plants, dirt and glass on the floor in the front room.
Farley said the woman tried to speak to officers at the scene, but wasn't able to tell them much because of her injury. Officers escorted her to the hospital where she had surgery, and will wait to hear her side of the story.
Police arrested Lewis, 47, on a complaint of assault with a deadly weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He's being held without bond.
