The U.S. Marshals Task Force arrested a man July 8 who escaped an Oklahoma Department of Corrections halfway house last week.  Just last April, a judge sentenced Michael Brummett Jr. to eight years in prison. Eleven months later he was put into the Tulsa Transitional Center Halfway House where he escaped.

The task force got a tip Brummett was staying in an apartment complex in west Tulsa, so they went to check.

"The suspect vehicle came out of the complex, a short pursuit ensued, the subject bailed from the vehicle," said Sgt. Jeff Freeman, Tulsa County Sheriff's Office.

Tulsa Police and the Sheriff's Office set up a perimeter extending as far as Highway 412. Brummett was discovered hiding in a shed near 61st West Avenue and Charles Page Boulevard.

"It is just a standard operating procedure," Sgt. Freeman said. "He is a DOC escapee, and he does have a history of weapons offenses so it's just a precautionary measure."

They used K-9s to eventually find Brummett and arrest him. They also arrested two people who were with Brummett before he ran.

Sgt. Jeff Freeman, Tulsa County Sheriff's Office: "They were in the vehicle with the suspect. We are still investigating, they may be facing some charges on their own right."

Court records show Brummett has been in and out of prison for nearly the past 20 years for burglary, having a gun as a felon and car theft. After being sentenced to eight years in April of 2018, he was moved into the halfway house, this March.

Deputies says Brummett had a gun with him when he ran.

"We have the abilities to go to radio channels to be able to communicate with each other which makes it quite helpful," Sgt. Freeman said.

"We just established a perimeter and were able to keep him inside the perimeter and take him into custody."

Deputies say this was a dangerous situation, but good team work kept anyone from getting hurt.

Brummett was booked into the Tulsa County Jail on complaints of eluding police and escaping custody.
