Man In Custody, Charged With First-Degree Murder In Latest Tulsa Shooting Death

The Tulsa County District Attorney has filed a first-degree murder charge against a man in Tulsa's latest shooting death. It happened in the 5300 block of North Johnstown on May 1, 2019.

Police say the victim is 55-year-old Sidney Ray, and they believe he was the only person home moments before the shooting. Ray was sitting in his front porch near 56th Street North and Peoria when officers say he was shot in the head.

Someone walking by the house saw him and called 911, but Ray died at the hospital.

Reginald Sutton is now in custody, charged in Ray's death. Police say they followed several leads and put out a warrant for Sutton's arrest. He turned himself into police Thursday evening.

"There was no plan to make a good getaway, so to speak, so the clumsiness has allowed us to get good evidence," said Sergeant Shane Tuell.

Police also found the murder weapon. They say Sutton had gone over to the neighbor's garage and dumped some items off, then fled the scene.

"We went inside and found some evidence, and that's what got the ball rolling," said Sgt. Brandon Watkins, Tulsa Police.

Police talked with several neighbors who say they heard an argument leading up to the shooting. Sergeant Shane Tuell said people are fed up with violence and want to see these shooters held accountable.

"When the community says 'hey, I've had enough. Let me tell you what I know' or 'let me tell you who this person hangs out with', that is so helpful to us and that begins to drive down crime," said Tuell.

Police said they talked with a second suspect, but he has been released for now.

This is Tulsa's 22nd homicide of 2019.
