Tulsa Public Schools Recruiting Furloughed Government Workers

Tulsa Schools are inviting furloughed workers into the classroom. The district is asking federal workers who have been without pay because of the government shutdown to apply to be substitute teachers.

“We are excited to offer an opportunity for those who may be impacted by the government shutdown," said Tulsa Public Schools Quentin Liggins.

Federal workers have gone more than a month without a paycheck.

Section 8 Housing Impacted By Shutdown 

"The proposal outlined by President Trump that we will consider here in the Senate is the only proposal, the only one currently before us that can be signed by the President and immediately reopen the government,” said Senator Mitch McConnell.

"We heard the particulars that were in it and it was a non-starter," said Representative Nancy Pelosi.

Tulsa Public Schools announced today it's opening up the doors of district schools to furloughed workers.

"As you know we have faced some headwinds in recruiting teachers here in the state of Oklahoma and this is an opportunity for individuals who may be in another profession to get exposure to working in our schools and hopefully fall in love with the profession," said Liggins.

The district says that substitute teaching can be a full or part time job and all the information needed to apply, is online.

"Our teachers are great resources and assets to the district but sometimes they have to take a day off and when those individuals are taking a day off we want to make sure we have a person ready to step in to that placement and provide a high-quality experience for our young people and bring in some diversity and perspectives," said Liggins.
