OSBI Launches 'Official Misconduct' Investigation In Coweta

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the City of Coweta.

The OSBI launched the investigation Friday; a spokeswoman said it's for "official misconduct" by two city employees.

Coweta Police Chief Michael Bell said he asked for the guns and badges of Court Bailiff Doug Black and Code Compliance Officer Lacey Carothers after a city council meeting Monday night.

He said the OSBI is investigating the two for potentially violating state statutes but said he can't say much else while the investigation is ongoing.

The OSBI said the Wagoner County District Attorney called for the official misconduct investigation on June 2nd.

News of the investigation comes after a contentious city council meeting where councilors voted out Steve Whitlock as city manager. Right after the vote, council members Billy Embrey and Steve Garman resigned.

We tried to contact all three for a comment but could not reach them.

The mayor's office referred all questions to the police department.

The police chief said the OSBI investigation is not connected to the city manager or the city councilors.

The OSBI said its investigation will take weeks, if not months, to finish.
