Broken Arrow has temporarily closed one of its parks because of a nearby sewage leak.
In a news release, officials say Sieling Park, located in the 500 block of West Iola was closed due to environmental concerns from that leak. A citizen called in about dead fish in a creek that runs through the park, alerting the city to the problem.
They say the actual leak occurred north of the park near the Broken Arrow Expressway and Elm Place. A subcontractor working on a new parking lot for the Ferguson car dealership damaged a manhole to a sanitary sewer line about a week ago, a city spokesperson said.
Debris and mud fell in and plugged up the 8-inch line.
Spokesperson Krista Flasch said the contractor is working with the city and has agreed to pay for repairs.
Officials add the city has also notified the state Department of Environmental Quality about leak.
The park remains closed until further notice, Flasch said in a news release. They will be adding fresh water to the creek and testing it.
