High winds knocked down trees in one rural Mayes County neighborhood just south of the Will Rogers Turnpike leading to scattered power outages early Wednesday, April 26.
The area is about two miles south of the town of Adair.
A family of four say they were able to ride out the storm by getting into a closet. They said the winds knocked down their barn and three horses inside escaped into a nearby pasture. The horses were not injured.
Brittany Perkins says neighbors have pulled together, even using chainsaws to clear trees from nearby roads and driveways. Mark and Sherry Kuder are going to be busy clearing trees from their property just so they can get out of their driveway.
Both families said they had no idea there was a possible tornado coming through the area. They heard thunder but did not realize the strength of the winds that came through.
Northeast Oklahoma Electric Cooperative is reporting power outages in Mayes and Delaware counties, but said crews are working to get everyone back on.
Both the Kuders and Perkins families said they are making due.
