A man is dead after an overnight Wagoner structure fire. The Wagoner Fire Chief Kelly Grooms said it's the first fatal fire in the city in at least 15 years.
Firefighters were called to the fourplex in the 1500 block of Ash Avenue at 1:05 a.m. Sunday, September 4, 2016.
Some other residents escaped the fire, and the chief said he understood police - who were first to arrive on scene - helped a mother and her two kids get out.
Property manager Doris Cantrell said her grandson, Cameron, helped rescue the elderly fire victim's wife. She was checked out but not admitted to the local hospital, Grooms said.
Some of the other residents were on vacation so were not home at the time of the fire.
Several agencies including Wagoner and Whitehorn Fire Departments, Wagoner County Emergency Management and the Red Cross responded.
The building is a total loss, and a couple of vehicles parked outside the complex were destroyed. The Red Cross is assisting the people who lost their homes.
The victim was an elderly man, but no other information has been released. Firefighters said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
The city reports there have been three fatal fires since 1991.
Doris Cantrell said anyone who would like to make clothing or furniture donations to the fire victims could call her at 918-485-4607 for more information.
