Jessi Mitchell joined the News On 6 team in August 2016. Most recently she worked as a reporter at KOAA in Pueblo and Colorado Springs, Colo. where she covered major events like the Planned Parenthood shooting and the Hayden Pass Wildfire. She describes herself as a “sponge,” as she loves to learn and enjoys being able to cover a wide variety of stories and weather events like blizzards and tumbleweed problems. Her specialty is breaking down complicated topics for the public to understand.
Before living in Colorado, Jessi was a reporter and weekend anchor at WRBL in Columbus, Ga. Wherever she goes, Jessi inevitably becomes known for not only great storytelling, but also her shoes. She collects Nike sneakers and matches them to her professional reporter attire regularly.
Jessi graduated from Hampton University magna cum laude on a Presidential scholarship, where she majored in Broadcast Journalism and minored in Spanish. As a student, she interned at KSHB in Kansas City, Nike and HGTV. She was also captain of the women’s golf team. To this day, she loves being the “ringer” on scramble teams, as she can drive the ball far down the fairway from the ladies’ tees.
From Hampton, Jessi moved to her birthplace of Los Angeles and worked behind the scenes as a production assistant for MTV Networks. She was also an English tutor for No Child Left Behind and a background actress. She knew her passion was telling personal stories, however, so she left the big city to pursue her reporting career after a year.
Journalism runs in the family. Jessi’s dad is a retired CBS News cameraman and her mom was a technical director in Oprah’s control room. Her brother is also a photographer and her sister worked a stint as a producer. She and her dad produced their own golf show with Jessi as the host when she was just 12 years old.
Family is also what brings Jessi to Oklahoma. Her husband is in the Army and recently got stationed in OKC as a recruiter. She’s found the local community to be extremely welcoming and she loves being able to tell your stories. You can connect with Jessi on Facebook or follow her on Twitter. If you have story ideas, you can also send them to her directly.
