All week long, News On 6 is sharing stories of veterans nominated to win an $800 mattress set from Bob Mills Furniture.
6 In The Morning anchors Rich Lenz, LeAnne Taylor and Alan Crone recently joined Bob Mills and Dr. Angie from Bob Mills Furniture to surprise five veterans with a lunch and a gift certificate for a new mattress set. They were all nominated by someone close to them.
Barran Tucker, 91 served a total of 34 years and was drafted out of high school to serve in World War II. Tucker landed on Omaha Beach during D-Day. He was a prisoner of war and escaped twice.
He's now the last survivor of his unit.
"There were 32 of us, so we thought they would run out of ammunition and trying to hold it and run out of ammunition. We couldn't get any. The only thing we could depend on was air support and we couldn't get air support. So they told us to bring these three tanks and the SS told us they would kill all of us if we didn't surrender," said Barran Tucker.
In 2014, Tucker returned to France with an Honor Flight group to locate the remains of two soldiers.
