All week long, News On 6 is sharing stories of veterans nominated to win an $800 mattress set from Bob Mills Furniture.
6 In The Morning anchors Rich Lenz, LeAnne Taylor and Alan Crone recently joined Bob Mills and Dr. Angie from Bob Mills Furniture to surprise five veterans with a lunch and a gift certificate for a new mattress set. They were all nominated by someone close to them.
Sergeant Patrick Perry is currently still serving in the Army National Guard. He's been serving since 2006.
His wife nominated him for this mattress set and it comes at a perfect time. The family lost their home to a fire last November right before Thanksgiving.
Sergeant Perry was the one who saved his kids from the fire.
"I saw smoke coming from the attic. I saw it and thought that's not right. So I go out the front door and open the front door and it rushed in and knocked me backward. It all felt not real," said Sgt Patrick Perry.
He says his fatherly instinct kicked in and his military training certainly didn't hurt.
Sergeant Perry has been deployed to Kuwait and Iraq and says he plans to serve until he retires.
