Sooner Magic led OU to a 52-38 win over Tulsa Saturday afternoon in front of a sold-out crowd (OU's 100th straight sellout). With the victory, Oklahoma advanced its record to 3-0 while the Golden Hurricane dropped to 2-1.
Baker Mayfield threw for 487 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 85 yards and two touchdowns in a game that totaled 1,376 yards of offense between both teams (OU- 773 yards, TU- 603 yards).
Game Synopsis
Late in the first quarter, Tulsa failed on a 4th down attempt at midfield. The Sooners then cashed in on Tulsa's gamble. OU took a 17-3 lead with 1:18 before the second when Joe Mixon pushed through multiple defenders for a 10-yard touchdown reception.
The Sooner Magic didn't slow down, OU advanced its lead when Baker Mayfield ran it from 8-yards out to give Oklahoma a 24-3 advantage with 13:31 to play in the 2nd.
At this point, the Golden Hurricane's secondary was struggling with the Sooners offense. TU couldn't contain the run game nor defend the passing game. As far as TU's offense, it continued to make way down the field but had trouble getting into the end zone.
Tulsa got a break when the Golden Hurricane recovered a fumble in the red zone at their own 8-yard line. TU soon capitalized off the possession and scored off an 18-yard TD reception by Josh Atkinson, cutting down OU's lead 24-10.
OU upped its advantage to 31-10 when Mark Andrews scored his first career touchdown, beating the defense, racing from 61 yards.
Dane Evans connected with Keevan Lucas to answer back with a TU touchdown (31-17).
WE HAVE A BALL GAME: Next, Tulsa recovered the kickoff with nine seconds until halftime and then Keyarris Garrett snatched the jump ball for a 43-yard touchdown, decreasing OU's advantage 31-24.
Going into the half, TU's receivers were eating up Oklahoma's defensive backs. If the Golden Hurricane defense stepped up in the final half, Tulsa had a legitimate shot to win.
The Sooners picked it up mid-third quarter, increasing its lead 38-24 with Jarvis Baxter's 29-yard score, making it his first career TD for OU.
Tulsa continued fighting, punching it in from a yard out shortly after (Zack Langer TD, 38-30).
Play of the Game: With just under a minute left in the 3rd, Mayfield scrambled through defenders and found Andrews for a 17-yard touchdown (45-31).
Tulsa's offense continued to step up in the 4th. It was in full fledge, looking like Baylor in different uniforms. Evans kept launching and the receivers kept catching.
With just a few minutes to play, Lucas recorded another Golden Hurricane touchdown to answer Samaje Perine's Sooner score (52-38).
By the end of the hard fought battle, the Sooners prevailed 52-38 over Tulsa.
