Tulsa fire crews confirm a person was found dead in an apartment fire in the 3700 block of South Madison. Police and fire investigators are determining how the man died.
Firefighters say there was heavy fire showing when they got to the scene just after 10:30 a.m.
The fire was on the second story of a small townhouse complex in Brookside, according to District Chief John Steiner.
"We did a pretty good job getting the fire knocked down," Steiner said. "In the process we discovered a victim."
Steiner said the fire appears to have started in a bedroom and got up into the attic. He said the investigation is in its early stages and notification is being made to next of kin.
Neighbor Kensha Clark said she heard loud bangs outside her Brookside apartment and saw smoke about a half hour later.
"When I walked out on the balcony I saw the smoke was actually coming from the condo, so I walked out and knocked on their door to see if anyone was going to answer and at the same time I was calling 911," she said.
Tulsa Fire Investigators were called to the apartment complex after firefighters discovered the man's body.
"I'm shocked. I initially was hoping that I called in time that if anyone was there that they had gotten out," Clark said.
