Single Mom Gets Fresh Start In Tulsa Habitat For Humanity Home

A Tulsa family is moving into its new Habitat for Humanity home, just in time for the holidays.

Crystal Kravis, a single mom who is turning her life around, took ownership at a key ceremony on Saturday. Family and friends said the home could not have gone to a more deserving family.

It was the 313th family that habitat for humanity Tulsa has placed in a home since they were founded in 1988. And it was a day Kravis has worked toward for more than a year.

"It feels great; it's amazing,” Kravis said. “I have worked really, really hard. Now that I'm here, I'm like ‘What now?' I've got to set another goal. So I'll be setting new goals and but it feels great."

Kravis and her sons now have a place of their own to call home.

“I mean the world to me that my children will have a home, a place where we can start traditions and make memories,” Kravis said.

And for the single mom, it's been no easy task.

"I was a wreck,” she said. “I was a drug addict; I was out there using. And so I got arrested, and I got into the Women in Recovery program, which started my success. And then upon starting the Women in Recovery program, I was able to get into the Madonna House first and then to St. Elizabeth's Lodge… we've been working on what do I do from here.? So this is where I'm at now."

She's at home in a place that her Catholic Charities caseworker, Marian McKinley, is so proud of.

"I could just cry all day long because of the happiness for her," McKinley said through tears.

Her happiness is shared by friends, family and especially Kravis' sons, as they play at their new home.

"I love it,” she said. “It makes me really happy, and I think that's what drives me. I want to be successful."
