An Amber Alert is still in effect for a 3-year-old Cherokee County boy but News On 6 has learned it may be the result of a custody battle between the father and the mother.
The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office issued an Amber Alert for Johnny Michael Manning's 3-year-old son after deputies were told by the boy's mother the boy's father forcibly took him during an incident Tuesday night near Lake Tenkiller.
The incident happened around 8 p.m. at 15719 West Flint Rock Road.
The boy's mother told authorities she was driving with 3-year-old Kegan Manning and noticed someone was following too closely so she pulled over. She said three vehicles boxed her in and Kegan's estranged father, Johnny Michael Manning, 24, got out, banged on her window, threatened her and slashed her tires.
She told investigators he tried to force her to write out a custody agreement, but she refused. She said Johnny Manning took the boy at knife point and told her she would never see him again if she notified authorities.
News On 6 went to Johnny Manning's parents' home on North Vandalia in Tulsa Wednesday morning and spotted the 2004 black Chevy Tahoe listed in the Amber Alert parked in the driveway.
We notified Tulsa Police who told News On 6 the boy was okay and with his father, so the department's involvement in the case was over.
As of just before 4 p.m. Wednesday, DHS took custody of Kegan and the Amber Alert was canceled.
Detectives in Cherokee County will now try to get statements from both sides and sort out exactly what happened Tuesday night between the boy's parents.
