Deputies told News On 6 on Saturday that it appeared the dog might have been dragged alive behind a vehicle. Now, they don't believe that was the case.
Sources said on Monday, a man came forward voluntarily and said he found the dog on his property on August 29. He said she had either been hit by a car or injured in some type of accident. The dog was suffering, so he shot her to put her out of her misery, he said.
He said he left her in his yard, but when she started to smell, he used wire to drag her to the side of the road without having to touch her.
News On 6 sources said witnesses have backed up the man's story.
On Saturday morning, the family found their pet and called authorities.
Later that day, the dog's owner said: ""We don't know if [the dog] was shot first or she was still alive when [she was dragged]."
The Rogers County Sheriff's Office is forwarding its report to the district attorney's office.
Outraged animal lovers, including former University of Oklahoma and Dallas Cowboys coach Barry Switzer, pooled donations for information in the case.
