Five-Term Oklahoma Congressman John Sullivan Suffers Primary Defeat

U.S. Rep. John Sullivan, R-Tulsa, who has served Oklahoma's first district since 2002, has been defeated in the state's primary election.

Former U.S. Navy pilot Jim Bridenstine, of Jenks, defeated Sullivan and will be the Republican candidate on the general election ballot in November.

At 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, unofficial results from the Oklahoma State Election Board showed that Bridenstine garnered 54 percent of the vote to Sullivan's 46 percent. Sullivan conceded the race to Bridenstine shortly after.

Oklahoma's First District includes all of Tulsa County, plus Broken Arrow and Bartlesville.

Prior to his election to Congress, Sullivan served in the Oklahoma House of Representatives for seven years, including acting as minority whip.

Sullivan has been an outspoken proponent for immigration reform and was recently tapped to serve on the House Energy and Commerce Committee Leadership team for the 112th Congress as the Vice Chairman of the Subcommittee on Energy and Power.

Bridenstine has said he is sick of reckless spending in Washington, and if elected, he will make that his first priority.
