Confusion Mounts Over Oklahoma 'Personhood' Bills

There is confusion over the Personhood Bills being considered by our lawmakers.

Since there are two bills that the public is calling Personhood Bills – News On 6 asked Oklahomans For Life, the group behind the Personhood movement, to explain what each bill would change.

One of the Personhood Bills is backed by Senator Brian Crain from Tulsa. It states that life begins at conception.

He says it would not outlaw fertility treatments or abortion -- because that would go against U.S. Supreme Court rulings.

This bill has passed the state Senate and needs the approval of the House and Governor Fallin to become law.

The other bill is proposed by Representative Mike Reynolds from Oklahoma City. It also states that life begins at conception.

This is the bill that would ban birth control like the Plan B pill and fertility treatments that it says would kill a child. It would also outlaw abortion in all cases, including rape or incest.

Oklahomans For Life calls this bill more of a "philosophical statement" that would not be upheld by the Supreme Court.

If lawmakers okay this particular bill, Oklahomans would vote on it in the November elections.
