Two-Time softball Olympic gold medalist Jessica Mendoza will be honored at this year's Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Awards.
The Rotary Club of Tulsa announced Wednesday that Mendoza will be the female recipient at this year's awards banquet on June 18. The awards honor one male athlete and one female athlete who have demonstrated a desire to help others.
Mendoza was an outfielder for the U.S. teams that won gold at the 2000 and 2004 Olympics and silver in 2008. She currently plays in the National Pro Fastpitch softball league.
Mendoza recently completed a two-year term as president of the Women's Sports Foundation and is an ambassador for Team Darfur, which aims to raise awareness of humanitarian crises in the war-torn region of Sudan.
Henry P. Iba was an unparalleled success as a coach, a leader and a citizen. The Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Awards are given in recognition of America's premier athletes who have excelled in their sport and have shown by their actions a desire to help others. The Awards were created to recognize and honor one female and one male athlete who best exemplify the high degree of citizenship in the image of Henry P. Iba.
