TONKAWA, Oklahoma -- The word “versatile” might be an understatement for Tonkawa senior Jake Love, both on and off the field.
Love led the Bucs to a state title in Class A while leading the state in rushing with 2,846 yards. He also recorded 123 tackles as a linebacker and averaged 35 yards per punt.
If that isn’t an impressive enough resume, he has state titles in track and field and wrestling and played baseball for Tonkawa.
Bucs coach Mike Kirtley said Love will take part in anything and everything competitive.
“He’s a four-sport guy,” he said. “He is really involved in athletics, so I think that helps to make him a lot better football player.”
But Love will stick with football after his multi-sport days at Tonkawa are finished. He has already committed to the Kansas Jayhawks and their new coach Turner Gill.
Love will join the team as an outside linebacker and should fit right in – he will be the 11th Oklahoman on the Jayhawks’ roster after committing earlier this year.
And because of it, Love said he will be able to lead the Bucs as a senior with no distractions.
“I just kind of wanted to have my senior year free and not have to worry about it,” he said. “Coach Gill and (defensive coordinator Carl) Torbush and (safeties coach Robert) Wimberly are all really nice guys, and that’s why I chose Kansas.”
