NORMAN, Oklahoma – One day after pitching a complete game shutout in his first start, Oklahoma pitcher Jack Mayfield was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week.
Mayfield allowed just five hits and fanned seven batters on Sunday as the No. 14 Sooners defeated Oklahoma State 6-0. He became the first OU freshman pitcher to throw a complete-game shutout in the Bedlam Series since 1976.
The Texas-native, who said he was amazed at the atmosphere surrounding the Bedlam Series, retired the first nine OSU hitters and faced the minimum in six of his nine innings. His previous longest outing was a 3 2/3 relief effort against Kansas State on May 2.
