MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Kansas -- The Montgomery County, Kansas, sheriff is reporting an officer involved fatality shooting. Sheriff Robert Dierks said the shooting took place at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday after his deputies responded to a report of a possibly suicidal man.
Deputies went to a wooded area of the county where they tried to talk to the man, but he opened fire at them, Dierks said in a new release.
During an exchange of gunfire, the man was shot and killed.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has been called in to conduct an investigation into the shooting death. No names have been released.
Cherryvale Police Department also responded to the scene.
