TULSA, OK -- When the American flag becomes tattered and torn, federal flag code says the proper way to retire the flag is by burning it.

Community members donated their old flags to be retired Saturday at Mohawk Park in Tulsa. The Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution and Girl and Boy Scouts worked together to perform the retirement ceremony.

Organizers say the event helps pass down history and tradition.
