OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- State school Superintendent Sandy Garrett wants to keep students in school longer. Garrett is suggesting increasing the school year from 175 days to 180 and to extend the school day from six hours to seven hours.

Garrett told more than 2,500 educators at a conference in Oklahoma City she will create a task force of teachers, administrators, students and parents to study the plan.

She says the national average is a 180-day school year and 6 1/2 days.
