(Oklahoma City-AP) -- An Oklahoma City police inspector due to be given a police officer of the year award, killed himself at his desk Wednesday morning.

Police say Inspector Butch McKenna of the sex crimes unit shot himself between 5 and 5:30 AM. His body was found Wednesday morning by a co-worker.

Captain Jeff Becker says McKenna was a 24-year veteran of the police department and had worked in the sex crimes unit for about 15 years.

Police say McKenna was to be awarded the police officer of the year award next month by the Kiwanis Club of Oklahoma City.
