This is National Fire Prevention week and folks in Tulsa are doing their part to keep people safe. Cooper Elementary School hosted the "Risk Watch Safety Education Program" Tuesday.
The Tulsa Fire Department is teaming up with State Farm Insurance, the Tulsa Safe Kids Coalition, and local schools to provide smoke detectors for low-income families.
The program also teaches school children fire safety and injury prevention. Cooper Elementary Principal Janet Basset, "We feel that for our students to be able to have a good curriculum presented to them will help keep them safe throughout their lives and also it provides real, hands on tools and resources for the teachers to teach the curriculum."
The fire department handed out 659 smoke alarms last year and they've installed more than 300 so far this year.
