OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ A former aide to U.S. Rep. J.C. Watts, R-Okla., has been elected chairman of the Oklahoma Republican Party.

The GOP announced Saturday that Chad Alexander will replace Steve Edwards, who is stepping down after two years in the position to consider running for mayor of Tulsa.

Alexander, 28, of Norman, was the only announced candidate to succeed Edwards.

``I will do all I can to make sure that Steve Largent is elected governor and Fred Morgan becomes the next speaker of the House,'' he said.

Alexander said he has been active in Republican Party politics since he was president of Teenage Republicans at Community Christian School in Norman. He has also served as executive director of Oklahoma College Republicans and was the GOP's political director before being elected chairman.

Alexander managed the past two re-election campaigns for Watts and served on Watts' congressional staff and as a field representative during Watts' initial campaign for the Fourth Congressional District in 1994.

Republicans from all 77 Oklahoma counties met Saturday to elect a chairman.

The party's executive committee approved a resolution calling for Republicans statewide to support the right-to-work proposal.
