DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) â€” People often ask Lauren Bacall if she is still working. Her response: ``Yes, do you mind?''

``It shows that you're in the world and that you have a reason to get up in the morning,'' she said Saturday at the Quad City Arts Festival of Trees.

Bacall's career started in 1944 when she starred opposite Humphrey Bogart in ``To Have and Have Not'' at age 19.

She married Bogart a year later and they were together until his death from cancer in 1957. Bacall said Bogart wanted to work more than anything while he was ill.

``After his death, work is what saved me,'' she said.

Bacall, now 76, came to Iowa from Sweden, where she had accepted a lifetime achievement award at the Stockholm Film Festival.
