(Stillwater-AP) -- The Oklahoma State Cowboys could get new turf in the same territory. O-S-U officials say they hope to replace the Astro Turf at Lewis Field in Stillwater before football season.

They originally planned to keep the turf for one more season, but the turf has been in place since 1987, five years past the typical useful life of similar playing surfaces.

Football greats like Barry Sanders have romped on the rug, which is showing signs of all the wear and tear. O-S-U athletic director Terry Don Phillips says if the university can work the replacement into the budget this cycle, it'll be done.

But the school may install something besides Astro Turf. O-S-U will NOT put in grass. But one alternative is Field Turf, which is new and has the look and feel of natural grass. Replacement cost could be from $500,000 to
