OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- An Oklahoma County jury convicts a man of killing his girlfriend more than four years ago. The panel of seven women and five men deliberated about two hours yesterday before finding Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez guilty of first-degree murder. Jurors will decide punishment this week.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against the 51-year-old, who they contend shot Olimpia Cardina Fisher twice in the face on May 31st, 2003.
Defense attorneys argued Cuesta-Rodriguez acted in the heat of passion when he shot Fisher during an argument about their unraveling relationship.
Cuesta-Rodriguez told police the gun that killed Fisher went off accidentally when she tried to grab it.
