OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Tattooing becomes legal in Oklahoma on Wednesday as a law passed by the Legislature earlier this year takes effect to make the state the last in the US to legalize the practice.
And state Department of Health officials say they're being swamped with questions about the rules they're developing to regulate tattoo artists.
The requirements for a tattoo license include professional experience in tattooing or completing an approved apprentice program. Tattooists must also pass a standardized test and CPR and first-aid classes.
The license fee is $1,000 for the first year and $500 a year to renew the license.
Supporters of legalizing tattooing say the requirements make it more difficult for just anyone to pick up a tattoo machine and will make getting a tattoo safer for the public.
