OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Family members of a 22-year-old soldier from Newkirk confirmed today that he was killed Friday in Iraq when an explosive device detonated near his vehicle.
Specialist Jared Hartley was assigned to the 125th Forward Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, in Fort Riley, Kansas.
Alex Hartley says his younger brother was a gunner aboard a Humvee that was targeted near Taji. He says he expects his brother likely took the brunt of the explosion.
Jared Hartley was a 2002 graduate of Newkirk High School, where he played football and basketball.
He was serving his second tour in Iraq.
Family members say funeral services have not been set.
