Museums to trace history of Conoco, Phillips

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. (AP) -- ConocoPhillips announced plans Friday to build museums in Bartlesville and Ponca City to hold oil-related artifacts, photographs and historical items.

The company will provide up to $5-million for each of museum and Arvest bank is donating a building for the museum in Bartlesville.

Phillips Petroleum and Conoco were both formerly headquartered in Oklahoma, Phillips in Bartlesville and Conoco in Ponca City.

The two museums are to be completed by May 2007 in time for Oklahoma's centennial celebration. Governor Brad Henry says they will improve community education, tourism and economic development.

Conoco moved from Ponca City to Houston in 1949 and merged with then Bartlesville-based Phillips in 2002 to create ConocoPhillips.

The company has about 2,200 employees in Bartlesville and about 1,500 in Ponca City.
