El Reno residents are waking up to a potential $100 fine if they violate the emergency proclamation put into effect last week.
During Tuesday night's council meeting, the Mayor of El Reno Matt White said that the city had no way of enforcing the proclamation unless they approved something like the fine.
It eventually unanimously passed, but Mayor White said officials hope they don't have to use it.
"We're asking you right now to basically do the right thing," said Mayor White. "We don't want to impose fines, we don't."
The mayor has been vocal in days prior, strongly encouraging residents to wear masks. The emergency proclamation does the same.
The council discussed what they should do next in terms of regulating face coverings. They ultimately decided the proclamation would stand as written until Mayor White had a chance to reach out to businesses in the area and see if there's a consensus on the action they want to see.
Currently the mayor is encouraging people to use curbside pick-up and delivery. He urged everyone to take precautions so they can all get back to normal life.
