Man Accused Of Breaking Into SW OKC Home To Steal An SUV

An Oklahoma City family's dinner was interrupted on Monday by a stranger in their garage. 

The suspect, 42-year-old Robert Wright, is accused of breaking into their home near SW 59th Street and Highway 152.

Police said the man attempted to steal the family’s SUV.

The quiet, gated southwest Oklahoma City neighborhood was still shaken the day after a bizarre break-in.

“A family sitting down for a late night dinner,” said Sgt. Brad Gilmore, Oklahoma City Police Department. “They heard a commotion outside, they go outside and the suspect is in their SUV backing out of the garage ramming into their other vehicle.”

Gilmore said the man found the garage door opener in an unlocked pickup in the family's driveway. The keys to the SUV were left in the console.

The homeowner called 911 for help.

Caller: “Oh my God, he had my Escalade out and he ran into my son’s car trying to get it out of the garage.”

911 Dispatcher: “So he was trying to steal your car?”

Caller: “Yeah, he was trying. He was in my garage stealing my car.”

Police said Wright rammed the car so hard it left skid marks on the driveway. The accused burglar tried to run when he saw the homeowners.

Caller: “My husband busted him in the jaw and he took off running. My husband seen him and he’s in the truck looking for him.”

Wright got away but was caught by police a short time later, at a relative's home just down the street 

“He tried to get out the window,” said Gilmore. “We were able to pull him through the window and took him into custody.”

Even after Wright was in custody, he was uncooperative with the Oklahoma County jail staff as seen in his booking photos. 

The homeowner's said they were still in disbelief they were the target.

Caller: “I can not believe somebody came in my garage like this.”

Police said Wright did have some injuries to his face, but the homeowners were not attacked in any way.
