The Tulsa Police Department says a man was arrested after two officers were shot Monday morning.
Chief Wendell Franklin said Sgt. Craig Johnson and Officer Aurash Zarkeshan were taken to separate hospitals in critical condition after the event started as a traffic stop near 21st Street and I-44. Officers said David Anthony Ware was named as a suspect, and charges have been filed against him for two counts of shooting with intent to kill and possession of a firearm.
According to Chief Wendell Franklin, the officers asked Ware to exit his vehicle because the vehicle needed to be towed due to taxes due to the state but Ware refused to comply. Franklin said that as the encounter became more physical,
Sgt. Johnson attempted to use his taser on Ware but he continued to refuse. Chief Franklin said that the officer fired his taser and made "good contact" at which point the officers worked to remove Ware from the vehicle physically.
Franklin said that during the struggle Ware pulled out a gun and fired multiple rounds hitting the officers.
Police said after the shooting Ware may have left the scene in a red Jeep Liberty driven by Matt Hall. Chief Franklin confirmed that Hall has been taken into custody in Broken Arrow.
Both officers required emergency surgery, police said.
Governor Kevin Stitt is also commenting the shooting saying:
"I ask Oklahomans to join the First Lady and me in praying for the officers who were injured, their families, and the Tulsa Police Department. This senseless attack is a reminder of the dangers our law enforcement officers face daily."
