Owasso Schools Pushes Back School Start Date; Will Begin Distance Learning

Owasso Schools is pushing back the start of the school year and becomes the latest district to move their classes to a virtual platform this fall.

The district said they will shift to their "pivot at home" plan, which will push back the first day from August 13 to August 24 and shift from in-person to at-home learning. The district originally gave parents the option to enroll in virtual classes for the fall earlier this summer and said those parents can stay with that choice or move into the new pivot plan.

Students will still be assigned a teacher for each site. Teachers will report to their building sites on August 10 and will continue the process of shifting their classrooms to a virtual setting.

The district said the plan was to meet in-person until it just became too much of a concern.

"The last three weeks we have watched the trend of cases increase regarding COVID-19. We had hoped that would not be the case as we came closer to the first day of school. However, that is the situation in which we find ourselves," OPS Superintendent Dr. Amy Fitchner.

The district said more information will be coming out for parents in the days ahead.
