Demonstrators gathered outside Kiefer’s School Board meeting Monday night, in support of students who designed a homecoming float with a political spin.
The float was themed around President Donald Trump and featured a student dressed as a prison inmate wearing a Hillary Clinton mask. Some parents complained, saying it was inappropriate, which led to rumors they would protest at the board meeting.
Dozens of people showed up to support the students who made the float.
“They said that we were making political statements and all this, but it really wasn’t that, we were just trying to have a fun theme for the float,” junior Shaely Johnson said.
The school board did not discuss the issue in the meeting and no other groups protested.
Kiefer’s superintendent said in a statement, saying,
“The annual homecoming parade is meant to be a special time when we come together as a community to celebrate our schools, our students and our student athletes. We regret that this year’s event has caused division and diverted attention from this celebration. We have addressed this matter internally and look forward to continuing the already challenging year focused on the safety and academic needs of our students.”
