People in Owasso are coming together to help nursing home residents who have been kept away from their families during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tina Jones started the Facebook group called “Owasso Giving Back,” where Owasso residents offer donations to seniors living in the city’s nursing homes.
Jones credited the “Tulsa Giving Back” Facebook group for inspiring her to create a group for Owasso about three months ago.
“We have had two nursing homes to work with to try to give some happiness to some of the seniors,” Jones said.
Jones said the activities director at a nursing home provides her with a list of names and a wish from each resident. She then puts the list in her group page and people drop the gifts off.
“Just them wanting a case of pop, snack, or those who are more diabetic, they want some sugar-free candy,” Jones said.
The Highlands is one of the nursing homes participating with Jones’ Facebook group in Owasso.
Elizabeth Sanchez, the nursing home’s activities director, said with families not able to visit, this brings joy to their residents.
There is a greater vision that Jones said she would like to accomplish: Getting other cities to adopt their own ‘Giving Back’ Facebook groups.
Jones said a new adoption list will be provided soon.
