The attorney of a metro mother described 15-year-old Stavian Rodriguez’s shooting death as an execution during a Monday afternoon press conference.
The family is seeking justice through a governmental tort claim that was presented to the City of Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma City police are investigating the deadly shooting where five officers fired at Rodriguez following an armed robbery call last month.
The teen’s mother, Cameo Holland, is seeking the maximum of $175,000. Her attorney, Rand Eddy, said that was the first step before filing a lawsuit.
“I’m here to seek justice on behalf of my client Cameo,” Eddy said. “Because she’s going through a devastating time as the mother of this poor boy.”
Holland stood silent next to her attorney at the Oklahoma County Courthouse. Their announcement of legal action was voiced in the hallways where justice is served.
“It was very reminiscent of an execution more than a legitimate justified, lawful shooting,” Eddy said.
Eyewitness video showed Rodriguez appearing to cooperate with police commands. Eddy said the video of five officers firing at the unarmed teen was disturbing. He sent notice to police and city officials regarding video evidence of the shooting.
“We would like all video footage including body cams, text messages, evidence of video footage by witnesses at the scene preserved,” Eddy said. “We don’t want to see any kind of hide up, cover up or anything.”
Garland Pruitt, the president of the Oklahoma City chapter of the NAACP, also stood in support of the forthcoming state and federal lawsuits.
“When we see a pattern, and what I mean by pattern, we’re No. 2 in the country,” Pruitt said. “We’re headed in the wrong direction. Just so happened two of the five officers have also killed before.”
The city has 90 days to respond to the tort claim notice.
